Desiderata (Poetry)

The word “Desiderata” translate to “things desired” in Latin. It’s a literary gem that offers a profound and ever-relevant prescription for leading a fulfilling life. Penned by American writer Max Ehrmann in 1927, Desiderata found its way into popular consciousness in the 1960s as a countercultural manifesto. Its soothing cadence, inspiring lines, and life-affirming message made it a favorite of hippies, flower children, and other seekers of spiritual enlightenment. But even beyond that era, Desiderata has continued to resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds.

The poem Desiderata serves as a succinct but profoundly motivating reminder to pursue lofty ideals. It serves as a subtle reminder to be kind to others, to accept them for who they are, and to be kind to ourselves. Ehrmann inspires us to acquire confidence in our own abilities and faith in how events turn out.

I first heard about the poem when our Oral Com teacher asked us to memorize it and recite it to the class. It made me realize that from the moment we are born, when everything is mysterious and brand-new, until the day we return to our Lord, in whom we shall finally find peace, every stage of our life, it has its own allure and beauty. The Desiderata instructs us to draw wisdom from past experience and the depth of history. Knowing and believing that the best is yet to come is the best way to live. Happiness also requires us to learn how to let go of the things from the past, particularly those things that youth gave us but that time has taken away, so that we can make room for a brand-new beginning in the next chapter.

One must continue to develop and nourish their spiritual selves while time and nature may weaken the body. There will be inconvenience in the path, just as there are on any journey. As we progress through life, we have a tendency to bring our burdens from the past and our concerns for the future with us. Our spirits might be severely affected by loneliness and exhaustion. It is important to take the time to embrace the moment and let go of these concerns. I always take some time to enjoy the little good things in life. Cherish the relationships I have with my friends and family right now, and more importantly, cherish the time you spend with them. My solution to my worries and ominous fantasies is enjoying my life and surround myself with positivity.

Always believe that tomorrow will be better than today and that the best is yet to come as you live each day. We put our Lord and Creator’s control over this in his hands at all times.
